Schwarzburg Castle, with its chequered history, is to become an open forum and think-tank which, together with the ‘House of Democracy in Weimar’, will be committed to communicating the democratic foundations of our society. In 2017, nancing for the project was secured with the inclusion of Schwarzburg Castle in the Federal Programme of National Urban Development Projects. Since then, the Thuringian Castles and Gardens Foundation has begun the design and fitting out of the first two rooms of the castle.
On the occasion of the centenary of Germany’s rst democratic constitution, the castle opened from 13 July to 13 October 2019 as an open building site with an audio walk. Over 1,200 guests listened to the history of the castle. Following this success, the open building site will reopen a second time in 2020, and the Friends of Schloss Schwarzburg association will once again o er guided tours. Parallel to the stream of visitors, the extensive construction work on and in the castle will continue, including structural reinforcements and masonry renovations and the insertion of a gallery level in the future gallery hall. Construction work is scheduled for completion in 2021.
The castle is intended as a centre for project work and democratic education for politically-interested visitors, initiatives and associations of all ages at a historically significant location in the heart of rural Thuringia.
