Schwarzatal, Schwarzburg Castle

Schwarzatal, Schwarzburg Castle

Thuringia is rich in castles and palaces. Schwarzburg Castle, seat of the former Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, has a particularly remarkable and varied history. In 1919, Friedrich Ebert, the first President of Germany, signed the democratic constitution of the Weimar Republic in Schwarzburg. Some 20 years later, the main building of the baroque complex was gutted and remodelled for use as a guesthouse for officials of the Third Reich. Never completed, the castle and its outbuildings remained empty after 1945 and fell into disrepair.
Schwarzburg Castle, with its chequered history, serves a poignant reminder of the challenges facing society and is intended to become an open forum and think-tank which, together with the ‘House of Democracy in Weimar’, will communicate the democratic foundations of our society. With the inclusion of Schwarzburg Castle in the Federal Programme of National Urban Development Projects in 2017, financing for the project was secured. Since then, the Thuringian Castles and Gardens Foundation has begun the design and fitting out of two rooms of the castle, which opened as a ‘show site’ on the occasion of the centenary of the first German democratic constitution in February 2019. Further rooms will be successively converted and put to use over time. The project partners are the municipality of Schwarzburg and the local ‘Schloss Schwarzburg – Denkort der Demokratie e.V.’ association.

The castle is intended as a centre for project work and democratic education for politically-interested visitors, initiatives and associations of all ages at a historically significant location in the heart of rural Thuringia.
