Think global - act local

The IBA Campus is a specific working format of the IBA Thüringen. For the participants, it is an in-practice experiment as part of the International Building Exhibition. Once a year, the IBA establishes a temporary international lab. For two weeks, students, young professionals and seasoned experts from different national and disciplinary backgrounds come together and live on site at a location in Thuringia. Experts and stakeholders from the region complement the team, contributing local knowledge and know-how. This climate of youthful enthusiasm and experienced inquisitiveness creates an ideal basis from which to develop ideas for a specific IBA project location.

The IBA Campus in 2016 is the first Campus jointly organised by the IBA Thüringen and the Wüstenrot Stiftung and takes place in and around the Eiermannbau in Apolda. Young architects, artists, designers, urban planners, sociologists and economists have been invited to explore experimental ways of bringing new life to the Eiermannbau, not least through their very own presence. The Eiermannbau, vacated in 1994, contains 4000 square metres of floor space and has remained largely unused for 22 years. The IBA Campus will look for new ideas for the future of this special industrial monument to the age of modernism.

The IBA Campus 2016 is led by four experts from different disciplinary backgrounds: René Hartmann (architectural and industrial historian), Andreas Krüger (spatial strategist and project developer, Belius Stiftung), Christof Mayer and Marius Busch (architect, Raumlabor) who are complemented by a series of international experts with specific know-how on the reprogramming of disused buildings.
