Climate-Agri-Culture: Testbed for a climate-conscious, cooperative approach to landscape development

How can we find new ways of seeing and describing landscapes? How can we reimagine and re-evaluate the concept and image of the landscape? And how can landscape, and with it agriculture, be reconceived and redesigned from a sustainable perspective?

The Landwirtschaft Kannawurf Betriebsgesellschaft mbH and agrar-GmbH Oldisleben are working together with the IBA Thüringen and the Künstlerhaus Thüringen to develop a feasibility study for the ecologically, socially and economically sustainable development and aesthetic improvement of agricultural farmland. On behalf of the partners, Green4Cities from Vienna will design a set of guidelines for a new, climate-friendly 21st century cultural landscape on 1,500 hectares of future in Kannawurf.

Sustainable agriculture needs to be considered at multiple levels in order to adapt to climate change. In Kannawurf, different climatic landscape typologies will be developed with the help of a regional-scale agricultural product management approach to develop a model landscape in Thuringia. Concrete measures to reduce wind and water erosion, heat islands and surface temperatures by means of individually determined, new cultivation methods and cultures form the basis for a new landscape and cooperative agricultural product management principle. The intention is to create new regional links between agricultural products and their processing to increase the proportion of Thuringian raw materials in Thuringian food processing and thus improve local economic cycles. The plan is to implement the measures outlined in the mission statement in and around Kannawurf from 2021 onwards.
